HISTORY OF MUSSOORIE- UTTARAKHAND

Mussoorie is just 200 years old.
In 1823 Before the British , Mussoorie was inhabited by a shepherd community whose cattle use to graze on the ‘Mansoor’ shrubs a type of lentil indigenous to the area which gives the town its name found along the hill slopes.
A British military officer namely Lt. Frederick Young is said to have established the town of Mussoorie. Captain Young and FJ Shore were fascinated by the natural beauty of Mussoorie while hunting, then they set up a hunting lodge on the Camel’s Back road. A lieutenant of the British East India Company and commanding officer of the Sirmoor Battalion from 1815 to 1842, Sir George Everest after whom the tallest mountain in the world is named, lived in Mussoorie from 1832 to 1860.
Mussoorie always provided a homely environment to the homesick British. Many beautiful, vintage building structures are proof of the importance of this place.
Mussoorie became hub for social meeting and gatherings especially for the British family of privileged class. In April 1959, the Dalai Lama moved the exiled Tibetan government here, but it was later shifted to Dharamshala. The Dalai Lama and Pt. Nehru established the Central School for Tibetans at Mussoorie in 1960 which is still operational today. More than 5,000 Tibetans live in Mussoorie and its surrounding areas today.
Another famous resident of Mussoorie is the Anglo-Indian author Ruskin Bond who has spent the majority of his adult life in the town. Due to its colonial past, Mussoorie has a long tradition of brewing. India’s first brewing house ‘The Old Brewery’ was started by Sir Henry Bohle in Mussoorie

Mussoorie By Air : The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which lies approximately 54 kilometres away, and offers daily connectivity with New Delhi 

Mussoorie By Rail : There are numerous trains connecting New Delhi with Dehradun, such as the Shatabdi Express (as well as the Jan Shatabdi Express), the Mussoorie Express, and the Nizamuddin AC Special. The latter two trains are overnight trains. The journey lasts approximately 5.5 hours, depending on the train chosen. All the above mentioned trains pass through Haridwar 

Mussoorie By Road : A scenic drive no matter where you approach it from, Mussoorie makes for a great road trip. When travelling from Delhi, you need to take NH58 till Roorkee (via Meerut and Muzaffarnagar), and NH72-A till Dehradun. Thereon, follow the state highway (known as the New Mussoorie Road) to Mussoorie.
