The history of Nainital states in Hindu mythology. The eyes of Goddesses Sati, wife of Lord Shiva was fell down here when Lord Shiva was carrying her burning corpse to the Himalayas. The name of the city is also taken from this legend. As eyes means NAINA in Hindi and this city has number of lakes, which means TAL in Hindi. Thus this place is named as Nainital. The discovery of nainital is belongs to two foriegners G. W. Traill, Commissioner of Kumaon and Garhwal, was the first European to set eyes on Nainitalcity on 1823.
Mr. P. Barron, a European merchant caught a glimpse of the lake and then he realized its potential as a hill resort. The hills surrounding present-day Nainital came under the British rule in 1816.
